Ostap Bender
Ostap "Joe" Bender
1925-2008
Joe is survived by his wife Rita of fifty-five years, his four children,
Jim, Ann, Nora, and Michael, his five grandchildren, John,
Josef, David, Christine, and Alexander, and his two
great-grandchildren, Jesse and Thomas. Joe served his country
in the United States Air Force for four years, rising to the
rank of Staff Sergeant. He earned his BS degree in Civil
Engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison,
and was also licensed as a Structural Engineer. During his
twenty-seven year career with CalTrans, he designed numerous
bridges throughout California, most notably the I-5 Bryte Bend
Bridge over the Sacramento River. After retiring from state
service, he went to work for the engineering firm of CH2MHill,
where he continued to design bridges and consult on a variety
of projects. The services will be private.
